The course-work will focus on understanding of both the fundamental principles and techniques of molecular biology. Students will study nucleic acid structure, molecular genetics, and the biochemistry of mRNA transcription and protein synthesis. One mini project comprises five linked laboratory practices that introduces students mRNA and protein expression techniques using cultured mammalian cells with or without drug treatment. Students will learn about cell culturing, measurement of mRNA expression levels and protein expression levels. Based on this foundation, students should become able to design and perform experiments using proper assay controls and analyze data after completing this course-work.
Research project in this coursework
Blood cell-derived cell lines are differentiated by adding drugs, and the differentiated cells are observed by confocal laser microscopy or fluorescence microscopy, and the expressions of cell surface markers are analyzed by flow cytometry.
